When the owners of the Raw Africa Collection looked at this estate, they did not see a blank canvas. They saw a place that had always had the makings of something extraordinary and had simply been waiting for the right expression of it.
The decision to transform Spanish Farm into a boutique hotel and collection of villas came with a commitment made early and kept throughout: to honour the integrity of the estate and its surroundings. Not to impose something new upon the land, but to reveal what the land had always made possible.
The result is a property designed around restraint. The interiors are clean, minimal and deliberately spare. Not from indifference to comfort, but because every room is already in conversation with something magnificent outside its windows. Materials were chosen for warmth and texture. Furniture for calm. The spaces do not compete with the landscape. They frame it.

It happens on the restaurant and pool deck as the sun drops behind the Helderberg. The fire is lit. The pools catch the last of the light. The panoramic view, mountains, bay, the distant outline of Cape Point, turns a shade of amber that no filter has ever quite managed to replicate. You sit with a glass of something from the wine route a few minutes down the road, and the word that comes to mind is not beautiful.
This is the setting that shaped every decision made in the redesign of Spanish Farm. It is also the reason the estate has endured for centuries: this hillside gives you something you cannot get anywhere else.
The grounds are alive with indigenous fynbos, with bird species that have nested here longer than anyone can remember, with silver trees that catch the light in the late afternoon in a way that makes you stop walking. Walking trails run close to the estate. In season, wild mushrooms grow nearby. The Helderberg Nature Reserve begins where the road ends.
And the region: the Somerset West and Stellenbosch wine routes are at your doorstep. Bikini Beach and Gordon’s Bay are close enough for a morning swim. Erinvale and De Zalze are among the world-class golf courses within reach. Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, all within an easy drive when you want them. All easy to forget about when you don’t.

Spanish Farm was not designed around sustainability as a marketing position. It was designed around it as a natural expression of what the estate has always been.
The pools are chemical-free nature pools. Water as it should be, swimming as it should feel. The roofs are planted. Solar power keeps the lights on. Breakfast is made with organic eggs and seasonal ingredients produced on the estate; it is not a meal you consume, it is an argument for a different way of living.

The guests who stay longest at Spanish Farm, who come back, who write to us months later, are the ones who came for rest and found something deeper. We had a couple stay for a week who told us, when they left, that it had been the highlight of their entire time in South Africa.
